CALI WILD
Call it Yaysoreal. Looks like a fun evening of music for those looking for something to do in the Bay this weekend (and just to be clear, I didn't write this release so don't get it twisted):
- Extra Classic presents "CALIFORNIA LIVIN' 2" a special party dedicated to the rich traditions of bay area hip-hop.
"Up to the present day, Bay Area hip-hop has historically been overlooked, as it relates to the development and evolution of Hip-Hop culture and specifically the "West Coast Sound." While pioneering artists such as Too $hort, Mac Dre and E-40 provided the blue print for other local artists to independently market their own uncompromising style of "Gangsta" Rap, acts like Paris, African Identity, and The Coup built upon the political themes of an early Public Enemy with a sometimes even more radical view point. In addition, the Bay Area also spawned artists like Hieroglyphics and Living Legends that contributed to the popularity of the "Underground" Hip-Hop movement.
While many artists and record labels achieved success independently of major corporate interests, the Bay Area has also had several hip-hop artists that were able to gain national radio play and wide-spread acclaim. While seminal artist Tupac Shakur achieved the most notoriety in Los Angeles with Death Row Records, he honed his craft locally with the legendary Digital Underground crew, whose P-Funk inspired party jams broke all boundaries of Hip-Hop at the time. But it was ultimately MC Hammer, whose Pre-Puffy dance-oriented songs and unique style propelled him to platinum status, and probably achieved the greatest commercial success of any Bay Area rap artist. In fact, many of today's most powerful hip-hop entertainers site Hammer as a pioneer in melding entertainment with hip-hop culture.
In addition to contributions in the art of rap, the Bay Area is arguably the birthplace of the scratch "turntablism" movement. By bridging the uniquely Bay Area "mobile DJ" culture with hip-hop, DJs like Apollo who co-founded the The Invisible Skratch Picklz (with DJs Q-bert, and Mix Master Mike) and brought the art of "scratch" turntablism to the forefront of hip-hop culture at home and abroad.
This event is a retrospective dedicated to showcasing the roots of this region's rich cultural contributions to the art form known as Hip-Hop. Featuring DJs King Most (Plug Label), Troubleman (Born n' Raised), Ross Hogg (Ital Selection), and B-Cause (4OneFunk) spinning the music of:
